So I Had This Post…

by Jane Devin on March 11, 2010

Come on the road with me by subscribing to my feed. Thanks for reading!

…and it was a good post, filled with bright, colorful pictures taken with my new camera — a Canon PowerShot SD1300 given to me as an early birthday present from friends in Detroit. I was really excited to show off my pictures, not only because they were some of my best, but because they were of art and an incredibly touching artist I was introduced to in the Motor City. I think you would have liked that story, and we might have had quite the discussion on whether art really has a standard definition, or if it’s something that can only be defined individually.

As you can see, this is not the post I had planned. This is a post about not having a post.

My beloved MacBook Pro, whom you all know as Mr. K, has had some issues. Right now he’s in a coma and I don’t know whether he will survive. I’ve researched his illness and spoken with specialists. Some of them believe I may have attempted to kill him. I am innocent. You all know how close Mr. K and I have been. There’s nothing he could do, short of dying a final death, that would make me voluntarily go back to Windows.

Yet here I am, back with the whiner. Apparently, our divorce was not final.

So do you want an update now? How about now? Hey, could you hold on, I want to scan some things. Do you mind if I restart now? How about now? How about in four hours? Oops, there’s a new virus. I need to update virus protection. While I’m there, what about Java? Do you want a Java update? How about now? Oh, sorry about that pop-up ad; that one isn’t covered yet. Do you want me to check for an update?

Windows, especially on default settings, never lets you forget that its there. Ever. It’s the partner that won’t stop talking, even when you’re in the middle of work. If Windows were a person, it would be the sort that grabs the remote and spends hours channel surfing when all you want to do is sit down and watch a movie. It would be the one that opens the refrigerator door every few minutes looking to find something that wasn’t there five minutes ago. It would burn the breakfast toast, drop the kids off at the wrong school, add a red sock to a load of whites, and then complain about how hard its day was — and how it needs a whole new start to feel better again.

Mr. K, on the other hand, was uncomplaining and proficient. He went about his day quietly and let me go about mine. When we got together, we had some great times, especially when we were making videos. Mr K just made everything fun, easy, and comfortable. He was a wonderful partner — until he lapsed into a coma.

I’m anxiously awaiting word about the future of Mr. K, and trying not to grieve prematurely. My host in Ohio has very generously lent me her Compaq laptop, and I am super grateful even if I do feel like I’ve gone back to the most annoying partner ever. It’s better to be nagged than to be left computer-less especially since a laptop is, well, absolutely critical to a writing road trip.

I should know something about the fate of Mr. K today, and I’ll keep you updated. In the meantime, here’s one of the pictures I took in Detroit with my fancy-schmancy new Canon camera. I managed to email it to someone before Mr. K became a sleeping beauty.

This is not the work of the artist I was going to feature, but I did have several pictures from this Detroit neighborhood I wanted to share. This orange home, decorated with religious figures, old signage, and a moose is part of more than a block of such houses in Detroit called the Heidelberg Project, which was started in 1986 by Tyree Guyton. Guyton’s project has been controversial, and the city of Detroit has razed parts of it before, but his decorated houses and lawns continue to get visitors and gawkers on a daily basis.

Discuss amongst yourselves. I’ll be over here wringing my hands and patting my wet eyes with Kleenex until I hear whether Mr. K is to live or die.

Did you try kissing Mr. K? Sometimes that works to wake them up. ;)

This is tragic. Did you back up your stuff onto anything?

No, no, this can’t happen. Not to THE Mr. K.! Love like the two of you had cannot die. I hope Apple comes to the rescue. I would miss your videos and getting a vicarious thrill from your love affair with a machine.

Keep your spirits up, Jane, and dry those eyes. Sleeping beauties always arise from their comas.

I’ve tried everything but that, Becky. Depending on the news I get this afternoon, it could be a celebratory kiss or a goodbye one.

Laura, not recently. I know — I suck at backing stuff up. I think the hard drive is still intact though. It’s the logic board I believe that’s the issue.

LBJ, I know, right? I’m trying to keep a positive attitude. While moaning.

The Windows update whine was hilarious. I hope Mr K pulls through.

Oh no … I’m think I’m a Windows PC … high maintenance and always fracking up the laundry. Great post, by the way! Loved the metaphors. D~

Computer issues are right up there with car issues. I don’t know how to fix either so I have to turn to others and hope they are proficient and trustworthy. It is so hard to live without either. I hope Mr. K just has a cold and not a nonresponsive virus.

I blame Mr. K’s coma on the extreme weather conditions of Detroit. I mean how can anybody actually survive through all that snow? Especially him because he’s a Californian and he most likely would be more comfortable living in the tree hugging sunshine state! :)

I drowned my last laptop with a full cup of perfectly hot, milky tea. The unintentional mishap was fatal. I now work with Windows 7 and find it to be a big improvement over previous versions. Hope Mr. K simply experienced a melting snowflake in the wrong spot that can be easily dried and repaired. In the meantime, that clever Canon will help created fodder for future posts.

That Heidelberg project ruined my neighborhood I grew up about 5 blocks from it. Ugly shame and it just keeps spreading. Anyway good post. But don’t think that we here in Detroit think that is art. It is crap showcased. I don’t get what the world is drawn to looking at that mess. If you want to really see some great art look at some of the architecture still holding strong in the city. Like the DIA or DPL plenty of art deco buildings around. read http://www.detroitmoxie.com for the real stuff to go see.

I’m a windows user myself, and so know what your saying! Aside from enjoying this rather humerous writing, I so get your frustrations. Sincerely hoping Mr K gets feeling better. A Canon PowerShot SD 1300?? Wow. Enjoy the picture-taking.

OMG Jane, I thought I was having a tough week! I will do puja worship to the Mac gods for Mr K’s revival. So glad it appears NOT to be the hard drive…but maybe this is the time to learn about http://www.mozy.com. They offer FREE basic backup service. If you want bells and whistles, it costs a little. I’ve not needed any bells although I wouldn’t mind paying for whistles now and then, but enough about my personal problems. I’ve been happy with cozy Mozy. yikes, I shudder at the thought of us being deprived of any Jane posts simmering but not yet soup! good luck, friend…

Hey Jane!
I’ve been following your adventures ever since Connie Burke told me about your American journey.

First off, I’m sorry about Mr. K. I dropped my iPhone in the sink last month and had 3 horrible days until he came back to life.

Secondly, I totally agree with Erica M. The Windows-esq rant was hysterical.

Finally, Jaunita mentioned my blog, http://www.detroitmoxie.com. It’s true, we have a love-hate with The Heidelberg Project here in Detroit. The comments on this post show that: http://www.detroitmoxie.com/home/2009/8/9/the-heidelberg-project-polka-dots-over-blight.html

I love reading your stories and following your adventures. If you come back to Detroit I’d love to buy you a Starbucks. Strike that. I’d love to buy you a Biggby’s.

Thank you all for your support and kind words. Well, except for ScrewedUpTexan — what kind of empathy is that, girlfriend? *I* did not break Mr. K. See new post for update.
